** NEW Oriental Fruit Fly Finds in Jurupa Valley

Summary of the Situation

Recently, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) found several Oriental Fruit Flies in Jurupa Valley. This invasive pest can damage many types of fruits and vegetables, including citrus, avocados, tomatoes, peppers, and more. Because these flies can spread quickly and harm California’s agriculture, environment, and economy, CDFA has declared an emergency response.

To protect the community and nearby farms, CDFA will be taking the following steps:

• Placing traps throughout the area to monitor and contain the infestation.
• Applying small bait stations on utility poles and trees that attract and eliminate male flies.
• Using targeted spray treatments only if evidence shows flies are breeding on a particular property.
• Removing host fruit, when necessary, to stop larvae from surviving.
• Notifying affected residents, in writing, at least 48 hours before any treatment occurs.

Treatments will only occur on residential and commercial properties, not in bodies of water or natural undeveloped areas.

This emergency program will continue through April 10, 2027, which is the amount of time needed to safely break the pest’s life cycles. Riverside County Agricultural Commissioner's Office and CDFA will also provide maps, updates, and contact information for residents who have questions.
